WISER Offers Tech to Help Stem Coronavirus Contagion in Hospitals and other Care Facilities

Following successful tests in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, and other healthcare facilities in 2019, WISER Systems, Inc. is accelerating demonstrations and installations of its cutting-edge wireless solution for infectious disease prevention, monitoring, and probability modeling in healthcare settings.

Raleigh, NC, March 16, 2020 WISER Systems, a developer of innovative ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless location and tracking systems, is working to help stem infectious disease contagion in hospitals and care facilities. Currently, hospitals and other healthcare facilities do not have reliable technologies to show the real-time movements of medical staff, patients, and visitors. They are also unable to track whether healthcare professionals visit one patient or another in a nearby bed. WISER’s healthcare solution addresses this issue. Built on WISER’s Locator system, it delivers precise real-time positioning, detailed location histories, and virtual geofences for use in healthcare applications. Hospital administrators and infection preventionists can use this system to track perimeter adherence, objects or people moving through decontamination protocols, or proximity interactions between medical staff, patients, visitors, and medical implements likely to be contaminated.

WISER first tested this solution for an application tracking C. diff in a large research hospital in California. Previous to this, WISER validated its Locator system for more general location and tracking purposes in hospitals, mental health facilities, and assisted living centers. WISER is now developing new hardware and software features for active projects with several healthcare organizations. These in-progress applications include new tracking use-cases for healthcare professionals and patients.

“We have a state-of-the-art solution that could be invaluable to those working on the front lines of this global pandemic,” said WISER CEO Dr. Elaine Rideout. “The WISER Locator can pinpoint in-person contact within six feet—typically within inches—and the system logs date, time, and duration of contact. This data will be invaluable when it comes to preventing the spread of disease and knowing who to quarantine. Historic data will help researchers explore and better understand how specific diseases spread. It will also help prevent unauthorized access to triage and staging areas or quarantined zones. Generating these kinds of data is our focus at WISER Systems, and we want the world to know about it.”

To raise awareness about the capabilities of its healthcare solution, WISER is reaching out to state and local healthcare leaders, beginning in North Carolina’s Research Triangle where many healthcare and healthtech companies have a strong presence. WISER will offer on-site tests and demonstrations of the solution—free of charge—for crowded facilities at risk of contagion. These could include regional hospitals, assisted living centers, nursing homes, or prisons, among other facilities.

About WISER Systems, Inc.

WISER Systems is a woman-founded technology company that started on North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus. WISER’s innovative UWB Locator delivers scalable real-time location in nearly any environment. The system autonomously reports precise (sub-meter or inch-level) coordinates via a computer or mobile device and is accurate even in cluttered, metallic, or complex manufacturing environments where conventional tracking technologies perform poorly. The system is lightweight and portable and can be deployed in minutes, indoors or out, thanks to the system’s Artificial Intelligence and WISER’s proprietary hardware and software. Although WISER’s Locator has only been on the market for a few years, 25% of end customers are Fortune 500 companies. WISER’s customers include several large aerospace and defense contractors, multiple U.S. Government agencies, and a large Japanese automotive company, among many other organizations. Headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, WISER manufactures its real-time location products in North America.
