Raleigh, NC, Sept. 25, 2013 — WISER Systems, Inc., an Internet of Things (IoT) startup located on NC State University’s Centennial Campus, has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The $450,000 two-year grant will support the continued development and pre-commercialization of the company’s novel Redundant Radio Localization Tracking (RRLT) technology, and will investigate its feasibility as a supply chain and logistics application in support of improved food safety.

“We are grateful for the USDA’s support and excited about the amazing potential of our RRLT Internet of Things technology. The Phase I experiments came out better than expected and we can’t wait to get started on moving from prototype to product,” stated Elaine Rideout, WISER co-founder and chief executive officer. “The fact that real-time tracking and locating can save lives when it comes to the food industry just adds to our commitment and excitement about this project. I’m particularly proud of our team, led by Dr. Seth Hollar, for the brilliant Phase I work that allowed us to secure this award,” she added.

The RRLT development effort is currently supported by a Phase I Award from the USDA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The Phase II research builds and expands upon the company’s Phase I investigation of current food supply chain operations from farm-field to fork, and tests the feasibility of RRLT system prototypes in farming, logistics, and distribution center operations.

The unique properties of our technology provide the basis for more accurate and easy-to-use localization indoors, where GPS doesn’t work. In addition, the platform technology has broad applications across a number of commercial markets. Following the successful completion of research and development, and market validation, WISER will obtain FCC regulatory approvals and begin manufacturing and selling the RRLT Real Time Locating System in the US and abroad.

WISER Systems, Inc. delivers inexpensive, real time location of material and personnel with one-meter accuracy within a defined perimeter — indoors or outdoors. Our patented Redundant Radio Localization & Tracking (RRLT™) provides autonomous, real time granular location and “on-the-move” tracking that can be monitored through a web-based interface on any computer or mobile device.
